Our Vineyard
Captain Vineyards, is now part of the NEWLY designated Lamorinda AVA, situated on an average of 19%- 35% slope and receives over 10 hours of California sunshine on summer days. Through consultation with experts and vineyard designers, we established a 3×5 matrix of vines and rows. By design, we cane prune our vines to limit production to less than 5 pounds per vine. As a result of this practice, the wines produced from our grapes have a great deal of body, complex character, and exquisite flavor. The decision to harvest is made when the grapes are judged to be ready in technical aspects such as Brix, titratable acidity (TA), alkalinity (pH) But most importantly ripeness, seed development and taste. We also use only locally grown grapes from our neighbors.
We grow 6 different wine grapes: Petite Sirah, Petit Verdot, Cab Franc, Cab Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and Grenache. The vineyard was planted in 2005, and by 2007, we were dry farming our grapes. Captain Vineyards holds the title of the first green winery in the county, first owl friendly winery in the county, pollution prevention award, water smart award AND CalCool award from California EPA. We use all these practices in growing our grapes and making our wines!!
